I moved to Madrid when I was 18 years old. I came from a humid, changing and full of life place, and I soon felt a great emptiness, a kind of remoteness that separated me from the ability to feel.
When the first storm came to town something reconnected in me. I could smell the humidity again, the sadness, the momentum. I felt relieved. The storm washed away all the pent-up energy, cleansed me and left me empty of heaviness and full of emotion.
22 years later, with the storms that return to the city every late summer, I recovered that memory and decided to paint these studies. They are born from photographs that I myself took of the lightning and fragmented moments that have been accumulating in my mind during all these years. I painted them with fast and energetic, abstract strokes, trying to reflect the aggressive character of the storm.
I chose these specific instants to immortalize that thousandth of a second in which, suddenly, the light breaks the darkness with violence and creates a moment of lucidity, to fade away again.
